021 | Supporting Yourself During a Crisis

The Problem with Health, Wellness, and Lifestyle Advice

One of the big problems with health, wellness, and lifestyle advice is that it is generally limited to what to do when life is good, when life is normal, and when life isn’t a total shit show.

But what do you do when life isn’t so great? What do you do when life is a total shit show and you’re in crisis?

Support Yourself During a Crisis

In this episode, I give you six tips for what you can do to support yourself during a crisis. However, if you’re currently in the middle of a crisis, here’s the key takeaway: It is ok—in fact, it’s totally fine and even extremely normal—if you don’t give a fuck about the ideal health and wellness habits when you’re in crisis mode.

With that in mind, there are still things you can do to support yourself while you’re in crisis:

  1. In these moments, give yourself grace.
  2. Accept that you have different priorities.
  3. Use crises as opportunities to observe your behaviors, and withhold judgment.
  4. Identify and hold on to things you have control over.
  5. When the crisis is over, dive back in—and know that it’s OK if you’ve lost progress.
  6. Understand that when a crisis interrupts your progress, it’s just that: an interruption, not a failure.

This episode is part one of a two-part conversation:

  • In part one, I talk about how typical health, wellness, and lifestyle advice doesn’t provide shit for guidance for what to do when life gets real and you’re in crisis mode.
  • In part two, dropping next week, I talk about how typical health, wellness, and lifestyle advice doesn’t teach concepts from the perspective of how to make something work for you. Stay tuned!
